Yellow Alert For Rain

The weather service has issued a yellow alert for rain in Lanzarote. A storm to the north of the Canaries is expected to bring rain to the island, with the heaviest between 3PM on Friday and 6AM on Saturday. Thunderstorms are also expected.

Island Wide Blackout

An electricity blackout affected the island in the early hours of Saturday morning, affecting all of the island other than those parts of Playa Blanca fed by a cable from Fuerteventura. The cause was an issue at a substation in Macher. Most areas were back online with an hour, but some took up to three. The power outage also caused the desalination plant to shut down, so water was off for most of the day in many areas while it was being brought back online.

Second Hottest September

September had the highest average temperature so far this year, and the second highest September on record, at 27.6 Celsius, one degree higher than last year and three degrees higher than 2023.

Migrant Numbers Down 45%

The arrival of migrants to the Canary Islands via small boats has decreased this year. Data published every two weeks by the Ministry of the Interior shows a 44.5% drop in the number of people arriving in the archipelago through these irregular routes between January and September 30 of this year compared to the first nine months of 2025. A total of 902 have arrived in Lanzarorte this year.

Sánchez Calls Snap General Election

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called a snap general election, which will take place on 29th November, after two housing bills he proposed, were not passed by congress.

800 March In Protest

Around 800 people joined a March in Arrecife over the weekend to protest the housing situation on the island and protesting at the proliferation of properties being holiday let on the island. Among the most striking messages on signs and banners made by the residents themselves were slogans like “Your Airbnb was my home,” “Studio for rent, 40m², €1,500,” “Housing is a right, not a business,” and “Being a landlord is not a profession.”

Heavy Calima Arrives

A heavy calima arrived on the island on Monday morning, with dust blowing across from The Sahara, as well as some strange insects. The calima cleared during the afternoon and evening and was follow by rain showers.

Food Festival Postponed

This year’s Saborea Lanzarote food festival in Teguise, scheduled for 28th an 29th November, has been postponed due to the General Election. It will instead take place on 19th to 21st March 2027.

Cabildo Buys Homes For Elderly

The Cabildo of Lanzarote has purchased nine homes in Arrecife for 1.9 million euros to create a residential care facility for dependent elderly people using a “cohousing” model.

Marlin Cup Victory

The fishing vessel Naomi, skippered by Juan Cabrera, emerged victorious in the 33rd edition of the Puerto Calero Marlin Cup, securing a coveted spot at the World Championship in Costa Rica.
