UK Air Travel Chaos Affects Islands

A computer issue at the UK’s air traffic service caused issues across the islands this week, with thousands of people who were due to leave needing accommodation as around 1200 flights were cancelled. About 2,000 people were affected in Lanzarote when they were told they incoming flights they were waiting for had all been cancelled.

César Manrique Park Opens In Tinajo

The 16.3 million Euro César Manrique Park, which is completely accessible, has opened in Tinajo this week. The new park also includes a sports area with a bike path and a calisthenics area, as well as a new stage for cultural events and a building housing a café with essential amenities. Furthermore, to combat the high temperatures and encourage relaxation, the park features shaded areas consisting of seven wooden and steel pergolas and six fixed stainless steel pergolas.

Hiker Dies In Femés

A female hiker in her 60’s died on a trail in Femés on Tuesday after suffering a cardiac arrest. Her companion was giving her CPR when emergency services arrived, but it was not possible to revive her. The incident happened on a day with exceptionally high temperatures.

Small Boat Arrives In Costa Teguise

A small boat arrived at Playa Bastian in Costa Teguise on Wednesday morning, with 20 people from The Sahara aboard, include a lady and several minors.

Yellow Heat Warning

Temperatures of up to 36 degrees are expected on Monday and AEMET has issued a yellow warning. The hot weather is expected to last for a few days. On Tuesday they will increase to over 40 degrees, and overnight will not fall below 30.

Drowning In Punta Mujeres

A 50 year old woman drowned in Punta Mujeres over the weekend – the third death by drowing in 7 days, following a 70 year old man and a 5 year old boy. Local reports suggest she had a cardiac arrest while swimming.

Sunbeds For Playa del Reducto

The contract has finally been awarded to supply sunbeds and parasols for Arrecife’s main beach. At this stage we don’t have a date, but the aim is for them to be on the beach before “the cruise season gets going.”

Fire In Costa Teguise

Firefighters were called to put out a fire in Costa Teguise, on land with trees and plants, and close to houses.The fire was put out with water.
