Child Airlifted After Drowning Incident
A 5 year old child was airlifted to hospital in Gran Canaria. The boy was pulled out of a hotel swimming pool in cardiac arrest on Thursday afternoon. Lifeguard and a doctor who was on scene gave him CPR until the helicopter arrived. The child remains in critical condition this Friday morning.
More Than 80 Dead On Boat
44 people were rescued on a boat which was adrift off the islands, about 65 miles from Gran Canarias, and which had departed Africa almost a month ago. Around 83 people died en route in one of the worst tragedies on the crossings so far.
Barbary Squirrel Hitches Ride To Lanzarote
A Barbary Squirrel, often referred to as a chipmunk, travelled from Fuerteventura to Lanzarote in a van, and was finally captured in Playa Honda. The squirrels on Fuerteventura came from a pair that were kept as exotic pets in the 1960’s and escaped. There are now thousands of them on Fuerteventura and they have caused damage to the island’s ecosystem. Anyone seeing one in Lanzarote is asked to call the police on 112.
Pino Tides
It’s the time of year when Lanzarote enjoys the spectacular Pino tides – very high and very low tides, caused by the alignment of the earth, then moon and the sun. Look out for usual sights at beaches this week!
Femés – Playa Blanca Road Open
The entrance road to Playa Blanca from Femés has been re-opened after a major refurbishment, which included a median, a bike lane, a new surface and new street furniture.
Calima Arrives
The island woke up to a heavy Calima on Thursday morning, with dust and sand from The Sahara in the air. The phenomenon is expected to clear over the next 48 hours, leaving behind high temperatures over the weekend.
Tourist Dies On Puerto del Carmen Beach
A 70 year man was pulled from the ocean at Playa Los Pocillos in Puerto del Carmen on Wednesday afternoon. His wife had informed lifeguards that he had gone for a swim and not returned. His body was located by a helicopter.
Ryanair Axes 2 Million Seats
Ryanair has announced traffic cuts of 2 million seats to the winter programme, This is to cover the cost of unhedged fuel price increases. People with bookings, primarily for The Canaries and Ski Destinations over the winter can expect cancellations, with the airline offering to refund or rebook.
Arrecife Mayor Takes Legal Action Against Social Media Troll
Arrecife Mayor Yonathan de León has asked his legal teamt to take action against an individual who made defamatory posts aimed at his wife and family. He said: “Anyone who holds public office is subject to criticism. I know it, I accept it, and I respect it, even if it is harsh. My wife and my family do not hold any public office and I will not accept that they are used to attack me, much less through insults, disparagement or insinuations about our private life,”
Teguise Christmas Market Will Be Back This Year
The contract for the Christmas market, to be held from December 3rd to 8th in the town centre of Teguise, has been officially awarded, with municipal sponsorship. The market in La Villa de Teguise will have around 35 stalls.
Priests House Restoration Will Start This Month
The so called Modernist house in Famara, also know as the casa de Luis Ramírez, will have it’s facade refurbished after the award of a grant to the Diocese. The Canary Government grant of 149,000 € will cover the entire cost and work will start in two weeks, and should be completed by the end of October.
Cable Ship Off Shore
A cable laying ship has been working just off the coast of Lanzarote near the airport and Playa Honda. It’s laying a new submarine cable which will provide a new, ultra high speed internet service, linking Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria. It will be able to move up to 60 terabits per second.
Unemployment Down Again
The number of unemployed on the island dropped by another 67 over the last month, to under 7,000 people. Overall, The Canaries saw another drop of well over 3% year on year in the number of people out of work, recording the lowest number of unemployed since 2009.
Illegal “Taxi Drivers” Could Be Fined 8,000 €
Two unlicensed drivers face a 8,000 € fine after police reported them for offering a taxi service on the island. Police found credit card machines and a phone with a What’s App group called “Uber” in the cars.
1,000 Registered For Ironman
More than 1,000 athletes are already registered for Ironman Lanzarote next May. 2027, the 35th edition, will be the first year when the Ironman organisation, rather than Club La Santa will organise it.
